Cosmopolite

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Cosmopolite is an album by the saxophonist Benny Carter, recorded in three sessions between 1952 and 1954 and released by Norgran Records. Some of the tracks had previously appeared on the 10-inch LP The Urbane Mr. Carter.

The album presents the alto saxophonist in two very different settings. On the first side he plays ballads in front of a string group. On the other side he stands alongside the trio of the pianist Oscar Peterson and the drummer J.C. Heard. AllMusic gave the album three stars and called it proof of his versatility: he plays exceptionally well in both formats.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to I Get a Kick Out of You and notice how the alto saxophone sings the theme while the rest of the group plays calmly around it.
