Aspects
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Aspects · In the late summer of 1958 the saxophonist and arranger Benny Carter recorded this album. United Artists released it a year later, sometimes also under the title The Jazz Calendar of Benny Carter. The idea is as simple as it is playful: each track belongs to a month of the year, from June in January to Roses in December. Carter used two overlapping big bands, which he arranged himself and in which he played alto saxophone.
According to AllMusic it is his only big band recording as a bandleader between 1947 and 1986. The music is solid mainstream swing, sounding by turns powerful and lyrical. The reviewer called some of the titles somewhat contrived, but the quality of the playing is not included in that. The album shows how Carter, who was originally associated with big bands, once again led a large band.
