Bee Gees’ 1st

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Bee Gees’ 1st · Bee Gees’ 1st is the group's third studio album, but the first to be released internationally, after two records that came out only in Australia and New Zealand. It was released on 14 July 1967 in the United Kingdom. Recording began on 7 March, shortly after the Gibb brothers' return to England, at IBC Studios. Drummer Colin Petersen and guitarist Vince Melouney, both Australians, were brought in to make them into a proper band. The sleeve is by Klaus Voormann, who also designed the Beatles' Revolver.

It is psychedelic rock and pop. To Love Somebody, New York Mining Disaster 1941 and Holiday were hits and give the record a melancholy tone. Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You opens with Gregorian-style chanting and mellotron. According to the critic Bruce Eder, it was more of a rock album than the group had been given credit for. By the end of 1967 it was in the top ten in three countries.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You and notice the Gregorian-style chanting and the mellotron with which the song begins, before the psychedelic pop song breaks loose.
