Horizontal
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Horizontal is the fourth studio album by the Bee Gees and the second to be released internationally, in early 1968. The first session took place on 17 July 1967, three days after Bee Gees’ 1st came out, at Central Sound on Denmark Street in London. According to the group, the point now was that the three brothers wanted to do things their own way and to experiment with sounds and arrangements. Bill Shepherd's orchestra is a fixed part of those arrangements. The influences range from the Beatles to baroque pop, and The Change Is Made comes from their love of R&B.
Massachusetts and World became international hits. World is a sombre ballad with mellotron, a dense piano sound and a fuzz guitar. The record sounds darker and heavier than its predecessor, partly owing to the greater input of guitarist Vince Melouney and drummer Colin Petersen. Fans responded with mixed feelings. The album reached the top twenty worldwide.
