In the Flat Field

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

In the Flat Field · This debut album by Bauhaus was released on 7 November 1980 on 4AD, the first full-length album on that label. The band had already released three singles, including Bela Lugosi's Dead, and recorded the record themselves at Southern Studios in London. The sound arose under the influence of post-punk bands such as Siouxsie and the Banshees and of David Bowie. The lyrics deal with martyrdom, paranoia, madness and obsession. Dark Entries tells the story of Dorian Gray from the novel by Oscar Wilde.

The British music press fiercely rejected the record on release. Even so, it topped the independent albums chart. Appreciation later grew strongly. One reviewer wrote that the album has almost single-handedly defined the image of gothic rock. Today it is regarded as one of the first and most influential albums of the genre.
