I Against I

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

I Against I is the third studio album by Bad Brains and was released on 21 November 1986 on SST Records. It is the best-selling record in their catalogue. The group left their early hardcore punk behind and explored funk, soul, reggae and heavy metal. The title probably refers to the Rastafari expression I and I, which connects the speaker, the audience and Jah. Ron Saint Germain was the producer.

The title track was given a video by Paul Rachman. For Sacred Love, at the producer's suggestion, the vocals were recorded over the telephone from prison, where the singer H.R. was being held for marijuana dealing. The record influenced many rock musicians. Sublime often play House of Suffering as a cover, and other artists name the album as a source of inspiration. Re-Ignition has been sampled several times in hip hop.
