Art Pepper + Eleven

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Art Pepper + Eleven · Art Pepper + Eleven was released in 1960 on Contemporary Records. It is one of the recordings Pepper made in 1959 with the arranger Marty Paich, and the only one on which he is the leader. Paich conducted a small big band and wrote the arrangements for a series of modern jazz classics. They include Move by Denzil Best, Round Midnight by Thelonious Monk and Walkin' Shoes by Gerry Mulligan.

Besides Pepper, who played alto saxophone, tenor saxophone and clarinet, the sessions featured pianist Russ Freeman, bassist Joe Mondragon and drummer Mel Lewis, among others. The clarinet playing in Anthropology is particularly striking.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the clarinet in Anthropology and notice how the big band plays around it.
