The Spiritual

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Spiritual is an album by the Art Ensemble of Chicago, recorded in the same sessions as Tutankhamun for the Freedom label. Lester Bowie, Joseph Jarman, Roscoe Mitchell and Malachi Favors Maghostut play here without a drummer. All four therefore also play percussion, and Favors sings as well.

According to a reviewer at AllMusic, the group here seeks out one of the main currents of jazz, the gospel of New Orleans and the music of second line parades, without letting go of the freer sounds. Because there is no regular drummer, there is no rigid tempo binding the musicians together, and that gives them room. The reviewer calls this the artistic peak of the group. The title track lasts more than twenty minutes.
