Fanfare for the Warriors

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Fanfare for the Warriors is a studio album by the Art Ensemble of Chicago, released on the Atlantic label. The regular line-up is Lester Bowie, Joseph Jarman, Roscoe Mitchell, Malachi Favors Maghostut and Don Moye. They are joined by pianist Muhal Richard Abrams, the leader of the AACM, the Chicago collective from which the group emerged.

All seven pieces are by one of the members: Favors wrote Illistrum, Bowie Barnyard Scuffle Shuffle, Jarman the title track and What's to Say, and Mitchell Nonaah, Tnoona and The Key. Each piece thus has a character of its own. The reviewer Scott Yanow of AllMusic saw in the record the conclusion of the group's first, and probably most important, period. He called it a fine calling card for this important avant-garde group.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Nonaah and notice how the horns alternate in a piece that Mitchell wrote and that has an atmosphere of its own beside the rest of the record.
