Sweetener
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
After Dangerous Woman in 2016, Ariana Grande began her next album in July of that year. The first song to emerge was the title song, which Pharrell Williams wrote and produced. She recorded more than thirty songs that did not make the album. Sweetener was the first album on which she took the lead in the writing herself. Her manager spoke of a more mature sound.
The album was released on 17 August 2018 and is mainly pop, R&B and trap, with influences from house, funk and neo-soul. It opens with a short a cappella version of Raindrops (An Angel Cried), originally by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. No Tears Left to Cry, God Is a Woman and Breathin all reached the top fifteen of the American Hot 100. Critics praised the experimental production. The album won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album, her first Grammy.
