The Suburbs
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Suburbs is Arcade Fire's third album and was released on 3 August 2010 on Merge Records. The producer was Markus Dravs. The lyrics go back to the childhood of Win and William Butler in The Woodlands, a suburb of Houston, Texas. According to Win Butler, the album is neither a love letter to the suburbs nor an indictment, but a letter from the suburbs. It was recorded in the home of Win Butler and Régine Chassagne in Montreal, partly also in Quebec and New York. He described the sound as a mix of Depeche Mode and Neil Young.
The band first pressed each song onto a 12-inch lacquer and then recorded it again for the digital master. The album received glowing reviews and topped the charts in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom, among others. In 2011 it won the Grammy for Album of the Year, a Juno Award and the Polaris Music Prize.
