Reflektor

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Reflektor came about between 2011 and 2013, in Montreal, in Jamaica and in Louisiana. The occasion was a trip by Win Butler and Régine Chassagne to Haiti, her family's country, where rara music deeply affected the band. The album was largely recorded on analogue tape. Alongside regular producer Markus Dravs, the band worked with James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem. There were sixty song ideas and eighteen long tracks, so it became a double album.

The music is art rock and dance rock, with lyrics in English and French. Butler was inspired by the film Black Orpheus and by an essay by Kierkegaard. Here Comes the Night Time and Here Comes the Night Time II are about twilight in Port-au-Prince. Supersymmetry was originally intended for the film Her. The reviews were positive, and in 2014 Pitchfork included the album on a list of the best albums of the decade so far.
