Neon Bible · After Funeral, which had been recorded in an attic studio, Arcade Fire wanted a permanent place to record. The band bought the Petite Église in Farnham, Quebec, a former church and Masonic temple that had served as a café, and recorded most of the album there in the second half of 2006. Michael Pärt made additional recordings in Budapest with a film orchestra and a military men's choir. Nick Launay mixed the tracks. It was the first album with drummer Jeremy Gara and violinist Sarah Neufeld as permanent members.

The sound is heavy and menacing, with orchestra, choir, hurdy-gurdy, mandolin, accordion and pipe organ. Win Butler was inspired by TV preachers and by the feeling of looking at his home country from the outside. (Antichrist Television Blues) and Black Mirror are among the core tracks. Reviews were largely glowing, although some magazines found it too bombastic. The album entered at number two on the American chart and was regarded as an example of the rise of indie rock.
