Funeral

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album

Funeral · Arcade Fire recorded its debut album largely in one week in August 2003, at Hotel2Tango in Montreal, entirely analogue. It was finished in 2004, including in the apartment of Régine Chassagne and Win Butler. The production is estimated to have cost around ten thousand dollars. During the work, several relatives of band members died. That gave the album its title and its themes: death, change and the loss of innocence.

The first half forms the Neighborhood suite, about a city without power in the middle of winter, based on the ice storm of 1998. Rebellion (Lies) became the most successful single. Pitchfork gave the album a 9.7, and the reviews were largely glowing. It received a Grammy nomination and appeared on many lists of the best albums of the 2000s. According to Stereogum it was perhaps the most influential indie rock album of its time.

Listening

Listening tip. In Wake Up, listen to how the song slowly builds and the choir grows ever larger. Notice how communal and exuberant it sounds.
