666 · Aphrodite's Child's third and last album was a double album with a grand concept: a contemporary reading of the biblical Book of Revelation. Vangelis wrote the music and film director Costas Ferris the lyrics. In the story a circus re-enacts the apocalypse, while outside the tent the real apocalypse is taking place, until the two coincide. Recording began at the end of 1970 at Europa Sonor in Paris and lasted a little over three months. The atmosphere was tense, because the other band members would rather have stuck to the psychedelic pop music that had brought their success.
The record company refused to release the album, partly because of the track written with the infinity symbol as its title, which Vangelis cut down from 39 to five minutes. Meanwhile the group broke up and the album was not released until June 1972. Reviews and sales were lukewarm, but later it gained cult status and became the group's most acclaimed work, with a place on lists of the best progressive rock albums.
