Vangelis

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Vangelis, born Evangelos Papathanassiou, was a Greek musician who was largely self-taught. He first became known with the rock group Aphrodite's Child and afterwards worked from his own studio in London. He often performed the music himself, live on synthesizers, without a score written out in advance. His music for Chariots of Fire (1981) combines a simple piano melody with warm synthesizer chords. It won an Oscar. For Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1982) he created a dark, floating sound with synthesizer, saxophone and reverb. That atmosphere became the model for a great deal of science fiction. Later came, among others, 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992).

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the broad, slowly swelling synthesizer chords with plenty of reverb, and the simple melodies above them.
