Sonor
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The pianist Paul Bley recorded Sonor in 1983 and the album was released in 1984 on the Italian label Soul Note. The recordings were made on 22 May 1983 at Barigozzi Studio in Milan. All the tracks are by Bley himself. He plays piano, and percussionist George Cross McDonald plays along.
The music is extremely sparse and even more rarefied than some of his well-known slow records, such as Ballads. Bley himself is said to have remarked that this was the best collection of his music since 1961. The reviewer Eugene Chadbourne found that a provocative claim and gave the album two and a half stars. He wrote that demanding listeners might hold it against Bley that he tapped a vein of boredom, but that this idiosyncratic musician perhaps wanted to prove precisely that such a thing does not exist.
