Selected Ambient Works 85–92
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Selected Ambient Works 85–92 · The debut was released in November 1992 on Apollo, an ambient label of the Belgian R&S Records. Richard D. James recorded the music between 1985 and 1992, from the age of thirteen or fourteen, with home-built synthesizers and drum machines on cassette. His first EP, Analogue Bubblebath, caught R&S's attention. He came to Belgium with a box full of cassettes, from which they chose tracks. According to James, they were songs that his friends found nice to relax to.
The sound is ambient techno, with rhythms from techno and acid house and melodies that are delicate and atmospheric. The opening track Xtal sounds hazy and dreamy. Pulsewidth is suited to the dance floor, Green Calx has metallic clanks and hum. Critics called the record a classic that broadened ambient and brought techno to fans of indie music. In 2012 the magazine Fact declared it the best album of the 1990s.
