Selected Ambient Works, Volume II
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Selected Ambient Works, Volume II · After the success of his debut, Aphex Twin signed with Warp Records, where this album was released in March 1994. Richard D. James recorded it largely in 1993 in his studios in London and Cornwall, with old synthesizers by EMS, Moog and ARP, among others. He said he was inspired by lucid dreams: after waking up he tried to recreate the sounds. He himself compared it to standing in a power station under the influence of LSD.
Unlike his debut, the record consists almost entirely of ambient without beats. The music sounds cold, empty and threatening, and uses microtonal tunings. Most tracks had no title, and were given abstract photographs instead. Critics were divided on release, mainly because of the repetition. Later the record was praised, and in 2016 Pitchfork placed it second among the best ambient albums ever.
