To You Sweetheart, Aloha

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

To You Sweetheart, Aloha · This album was released in the late summer of 1959 on Cadence Records and was the fourth that Andy Williams made for that label. The theme is Hawaiian, fitting the admission of Hawaii as the fiftieth state of the United States. The Hawaiian Wedding Song had already been a single in 1958 and stayed on the chart for twenty weeks, with number eleven as its highest position. The hit was already on his previous album Two Time Winners and was not re-recorded. Blue Hawaii and Sweet Leilani, however, he did record again for this record.

Archie Bleyer, the head of Cadence and leader of the orchestra, did not opt for traditional Hawaiian instruments or musicians from the islands. He had an ordinary orchestra play arrangements in Hawaiian style. What counted, wrote an AllMusic reviewer, were the singer's warm performances, which made the album a romantic touchstone. Billboard called it a tasteful, quiet package of familiar Hawaiian themes.

Listening

Listening tip. In Beyond the Reef, listen to how the orchestra evokes Hawaii without traditional island instruments and how the warm baritone voice carries the song.
