Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie is Alanis Morissette's fourth studio album, released on 3 November 1998 by Maverick Records. After an exhausting eighteen-month world tour for Jagged Little Pill, she retreated to India to recover. That journey gave the album its concept. The title comes from a line in So Pure, and the cover bears phrases from eight Buddhist precepts.

Her writing style became more complex and often departed from the fixed verse and chorus, sometimes like a stream of thought, with influences from trip hop and chamber rock. She wrote Baba and Thank U after the journey. Thank U reached the American top 20. The record went straight to number one in the United States, with the highest first-week sales figure a woman had achieved until then. In 2000 she won the Juno Award for Album of the Year with it.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Thank U and notice how calm and serene it sounds, while many listeners knew her from angry songs.
