Under Rug Swept
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Under Rug Swept is Alanis Morissette's fifth studio album and was released in February 2002 on Maverick Records. It was the first album that she wrote and produced entirely herself. In Toronto she wrote seven songs in the first week, each in at most about twenty minutes, with the vocals recorded straight away in one or two takes. Production was delayed by disputes with Maverick's management. Label co-founder Madonna persuaded her to stay.
The album is about repairing relationships and bridging gaps between people. Opener 21 Things I Want in a Lover lists what she is looking for in a partner, partly as a joke. A Man is written from a male perspective, as an answer to Narcissus. Critics praised the lyrics, the rawness and the singing. The record reached number one on the Billboard 200 and in eleven other countries.
