Elegant Gypsy

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Elegant Gypsy is the second album by guitarist Al Di Meola. It was released in 1977 on Columbia Records, as the follow-up to his debut Land of the Midnight Sun. The music is a fast mix of jazz and rock, with lightning-fast electric riffs and lyrical acoustic passages. Latin themes also appear, including some from flamenco.

The piece Race with Devil on Spanish Highway grew out of You Really Got Me by The Kinks, the first song he tried to play on guitar as a child of eight or nine. Many guests play on it: Paco de Lucía, Jan Hammer, Barry Miles, Anthony Jackson, Steve Gadd, Lenny White and Mingo Lewis. The magazine Guitar Player awarded the album its prize for best guitar album of the year.

Listening

Listening tip. In Mediterranean Sundance, listen to the acoustic guitar of Paco de Lucía alongside that of Al Di Meola.
