African Sketchbook

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

African Sketchbook was recorded on 16 May 1969 at Radio Bern, under the direction of producer Horst Weber. The album was released on LP on Enja Records. Pianist Abdullah Ibrahim wrote all the pieces himself and plays flute on the first track, Air. On the other pieces he sits at the piano. It is therefore a solo record, with short, varied pieces.

According to the AllMusic reviewer, the recording quality leaves something to be desired, but the music more than makes up for it. He recommends the album above all to listeners who know Ibrahim's later work and not yet his early period. The Penguin Guide to Jazz called the record as fragmentary as the title suggests.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Air and notice the flute: Ibrahim does not play piano here. Then compare it with one of the piano pieces, such as Mamma.
