Good News From Africa

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Good News From Africa · Good News from Africa is an album of duets by pianist Abdullah Ibrahim, then still known as Dollar Brand, and bassist Johnny Dyani. They recorded it on 10 December 1973 at Tonstudio Bauer in Ludwigsburg. It was released in 1974 on the Swiss label Cameo and the German Enja.

The record mixes traditional African pieces with Ibrahim's own compositions. According to AllMusic, Islamic chants also appear, and both musicians sing along movingly. The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings heard duos moving from dark, almost tragic pessimism to a jubilant, exultant climax. One reviewer called the album a personal celebration of a newly found faith. AllMusic spoke of one of the most beautiful recordings of the 1970s.
