Scoundrel Days

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Scoundrel Days is a-ha's second album, released in 1986. The songs were written by Pål Waaktaar and Magne Furuholmen; singer Morten Harket contributed nothing to the writing this time. The two writers produced three tracks themselves: I've Been Losing You, Maybe, Maybe and Soft Rains of April.

The sound is built on synthesizers such as the Yamaha DX7 and the Roland Juno, supplemented by a Fairlight and a PPG Wave. Manhattan Skyline begins quietly and switches in the chorus to a hard-rock-style guitar riff. I've Been Losing You became the most successful single in Europe and Cry Wolf entered the US Hot 100. The album sold more than six million copies. AllMusic particularly praised the first two tracks, Scoundrel Days and The Swing of Things.

Listening tip. Listen to Manhattan Skyline and notice the contrast between the quiet verse and the hard chorus.
