Hunting High and Low

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Hunting High and Low is the debut album by the Norwegian synth-pop band a-ha. It was released on 1 June 1985 in Norway and the United States, and at the end of October in Europe. The group recorded it at Eel Pie Studios in Twickenham, London, with the producers Tony Mansfield, John Ratcliff and Alan Tarney.

Take On Me had been released earlier without success. It was re-recorded for the album, and with a new video by Steve Barron it became a number 1 in the US Hot 100. The Sun Always Shines on T.V., Train of Thought and the title song followed. The band became the first Norwegian group to be nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist. AllMusic called the album cohesive, with clever changes of tempo.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Take On Me and notice the synthesizer riff that carries the song, and how high the singer goes in the chorus.
