Korean New Wave

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Korean New Wave · Around 2000 South Korean film acquired an international voice of its own. Directors such as Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho mixed genres and often had music work against the image. In Oldeuboi (2003), waltzes and strings from the team of the composer Jo Yeong-wook accompany violence and revenge, so that the scenes become almost balletic. For Ah-ga-ssi (2016), Jo wrote a warm orchestra with Baroque touches. For Gisaengchung (2019), Jung Jae-il wrote music that sounds like a Baroque suite while a poor family infiltrates a rich household. For the series Ojing-eo geim (2021) he chose childlike sounds, such as the recorder and simple rhythms. What they have in common is irony: elegant music accompanying cruel events.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to how an ornate waltz or Baroque figure simply carries on while the tension on screen rises: the contrast between music and action is the message.
