Jo Yeong-wook

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Jo Yeong-wook (born in 1962) is the regular musical partner of director Park Chan-wook. For Oldboy (2003) he worked with a small team of composers. The music is strikingly classical in form: waltzes and string pieces that give the violence on screen a tragic, almost operatic charge. Most of the cues are named after old films, often films noirs. For the vampire film Bakjwi (2009) he won the Blue Dragon Award for best film music, and for Ah-ga-ssi (2016) he wrote an elegant, European-sounding score for a story set in Korea under Japanese rule. He shows how Korean cinema uses Western classical forms.

Listening

Listening tip. In The Last Waltz, listen for the three-beat rhythm and the contrast between the elegant waltz and the tension in the film.
