Jung Jae-il

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Jung Jae-il (born in 1982 in Seoul) is a multi-instrumentalist who works in both pop and film music. He wrote the music for two films by Bong Joon-ho: Okja (2017) and Gisaengchung (2019). For the latter he wrote pieces in Baroque style, such as The Belt of Faith, a seven-minute orchestral cue accompanying a cunning plan by the poor family. The stately music is at odds with what is happening, and that makes the scene ironic. For the series Ojing-eo geim (2021) he wrote Way Back Then: a childlike tune on recorder and castanets, instruments from the Korean primary school, to the rhythm of a well-known Korean cheering clapping pattern (3-3-7). The simple theme was recognised worldwide.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the contrast between the neat Baroque form or the playful children's tune and the cruel situation on the screen.
