British and Irish folk music

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

British and Irish folk music · From the eighteenth century immigrants from Scotland, England and Ireland settled in the Appalachians. They brought ballads, long narrative songs about love, murder and misfortune that were passed from singer to singer, and dance music for the fiddle, such as jigs and reels. In this way songs such as Barbara Allen came to America. That tradition is the basis of Appalachian folk and country, and, via the folk revival, of the singer-songwriters too.

Listening

Listening tip. In Barbara Allen, hear an unaccompanied ballad in which each verse tells a piece of the story.
