Irish traditional music
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Irish traditional music · Around 1700 the blind harpist Turlough O'Carolan travelled from one Irish noble family to another and wrote melodies for them. When the last of the old harpers gathered in Belfast in 1792, Edward Bunting wrote down their music. After that, dance music gained the upper hand: reels, jigs and hornpipes on fiddle, flute and uilleann pipes, a bagpipe that you fill with a bellows under the elbow. In the session, an informal gathering in the pub, this centuries-old music lives on.
Listening
Listening tip. The Bothy Band plays a set of jigs, beginning with The Kesh. Count along: can you hear that every beat divides into three? Also notice the hoarse sound of the uilleann pipes between fiddle and flute.
