Trio

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Trio was a German group formed in 1979 in Großenkneten. The line-up consisted of Stephan Remmler on vocals and keyboards, Gert Krawinkel, nicknamed Kralle, on guitar and Peter Behrens on drums. At first the band was called Zam. The debut album Trio appeared in 1981, produced by Klaus Voormann, the man who also played bass on a few tracks.

Music and breakthrough

The greatest success was Da Da Da, released in 1982. The song reached number two in Germany and became a hit in thirty countries. Bye Bye followed in 1983 and the film soundtrack Whats the Password in 1985, for the flop Drei gegen Drei. In 1986 the group fell apart, after Behrens quarrelled with the others over money.

Influence

Trio belonged to the Neue Deutsche Welle, but preferred to call itself Neue Deutsche Fröhlichkeit. The principle was to leave out everything that was not necessary. The songs often had only three chords and consisted of drums, guitar, vocals and at most one or two other instruments. On stage Remmler played simple rhythms and melodies on a small Casio keyboard. In this way Trio showed that a hit does not have to be polished: the bare, almost childlike approach became an example for later electropop and minimalist new wave.
