Toumani Diabaté

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Toumani Diabaté came from a griot family that has played the kora for many generations, the West African harp with 21 strings. His father Sidiki made the first album devoted entirely to the kora in 1970. In 1988 Toumani recorded his solo album Kaira in London in a single afternoon, on which he plays bass, melody and improvisation at once. With Ali Farka Touré he won a Grammy for In the Heart of the Moon (2005).

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Jarabi and follow the three layers: a low bass line, a repeated pattern in the middle and fast runs above, all played by one player.
