The Mandé Variations
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Mandé Variations was released in 2008 on World Circuit, produced by Nick Gold. Unlike many earlier records by Toumani Diabaté, this album consists entirely of solo kora. The influences range from traditional kora music to modern Western music. It was only his second solo record, twenty years after Kaira from 1988.
Pitchfork noted that here only Diabaté and his kora can be heard, recorded as clearly as possible. The reviewer called the album exceptionally gripping from beginning to end and spoke of the awe that such pure music inspires. The album has eight pieces of between six and more than ten minutes. It was released on 25 February 2008 in the United Kingdom and a day later on Nonesuch Records in the United States.
