Sadao Watanabe

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The alto saxophonist Sadao Watanabe was born in 1933 in Utsunomiya. In 1953 he joined Toshiko Akiyoshi's Cozy Quartet, which he took over when she left for America in 1956. Charlie Parker was his great example; in 1969 he dedicated a live record to him. From 1962 to 1965 he studied at Berklee in Boston and played with, among others, Chico Hamilton and Gary McFarland. Back in Tokyo he brought bossa nova and the Berklee theory with him and taught young musicians. At the end of the 1970s he became hugely popular in Japan with fusion records such as California Shower (1978).
