Sabrina

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Sabrina Salerno, known as Sabrina, is an Italian singer, model, actress and television presenter, born in 1968. She grew up in Genoa and Sanremo and sang in the church choir as a child. After winning a beauty contest in Liguria she began as a model and made her television debut in 1984 in the programme Premiatissima. In 1986 her first single, Sexy Girl, was released, sung in English and produced by Claudio Cecchetto.

Music and breakthrough

In 1987 came the album Sabrina and the single Boys (Summertime Love), which reached number 1 in France and Switzerland and number 3 in the United Kingdom. The video made her a sex symbol. After that came hits such as All of Me (Boy Oh Boy), produced by Stock Aitken Waterman, My Chico and Like a Yo-Yo, produced by Giorgio Moroder. In 1991 she sang the Italian-language Siamo donne with Jo Squillo at the Sanremo festival. In 1996 her first Italian album, Maschio dove sei, was released.

Influence

Sabrina made Euro disco and Italo: fast, tight dance music with striking visuals. With Boys (Summertime Love) she shows late Italo, already leaning almost towards Hi-NRG, as it sounded in the clubs. That is why she appears in School of Rock as an example of 1980s dance music.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Boys (Summertime Love) and notice the fast, hard rhythm and the synthesizer line beneath the vocals. How clearly can you hear that this song was made for the dance floor?
