Nick LaRocca

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Cornettist Nick LaRocca was the leader of the Original Dixieland Jass Band, a group of five white musicians from New Orleans. In February 1917 the band recorded Livery Stable Blues and Dixie Jass Band One-Step for Victor in New York: the first jazz record. The record sold very well and made the word jazz known overnight. In 1919 the band also performed in London. Their playing was mainly loud and comical, with animal noises imitated on the instruments. LaRocca later claimed that white musicians had invented jazz, which is not true: Black musicians in New Orleans had been playing that way for years before. The group is important above all as the beginning of jazz on record.

Listening tip. Listen to the animal noises in Livery Stable Blues: this was entertainment, too.
