Mercedes Sosa

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Mercedes Sosa, from San Miguel de Tucumán, was one of the voices of the nuevo cancionero, the renewed Argentine folk music. At the Cosquín festival in 1965, Jorge Cafrune brought her up on stage. In 1971 she sang Gracias a la vida at a tribute to Violeta Parra, and in 1977 she recorded an album of songs by Atahualpa Yupanqui. In 1979 she was arrested during a concert and went into exile.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to her Gracias a la vida and compare it with the version by Violeta Parra: Sosa sings with a fuller voice and more slowly, like a hymn.
