Violeta Parra

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

From 1952 Violeta Parra travelled through the Chilean countryside to collect and record old folk songs. She was also a visual artist: in 1964 she became the first Latin American artist to receive a solo exhibition at the Louvre, with her embroidered wall hangings. Her last album, Las últimas composiciones (1966), contains Gracias a la vida. She is regarded as a forerunner of the Nueva Canción, the politically engaged Chilean song.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Gracias a la vida and notice how simple the accompaniment is: a few chords on the charango, with the same grateful enumeration in every verse.
