Atahualpa Yupanqui

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Atahualpa Yupanqui, born Héctor Roberto Chavero, chose a stage name after two Inca kings. He travelled through the north of Argentina and learned the songs of farmers and indigenous communities. With only guitar and voice he made songs such as Camino del indio and Los ejes de mi carreta. After years of censorship and exile, Édith Piaf invited him to Paris in 1950, and later he lived for a long time in France.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Los Ejes de Mi Carreta: a slow guitar, a dark voice and a lyric about a cartwheel creaking along the road.
