La voz de la zafra

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

La voz de la zafra is Mercedes Sosa's debut album. It was recorded in 1961 and released in 1962 by RCA Victor Argentina. The original release contained twelve songs, eight of them by Armando Tejada Gómez and Manuel Óscar Matus, her husband. The record later appeared in several countries under other titles, such as Canta Mercedes Sosa and Mercedes Sosa.

The album is regarded as a forerunner of the Movimiento del Nuevo Cancionero in Argentina. The Argentine Ministry of Culture wrote that this record and her second album, Canciones con fundamento, established her on the Latin American stage. This was due not only to the quality of her voice and singing, but also to her great social commitment as a founder of that movement.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to La Zafrera, one of the songs by Tejada Gómez and Matus, and notice how her voice carries the song.
