Maurice Jarre

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Maurice Jarre was born in 1924 in Lyon and studied at the Paris conservatoire, with percussion as his main subject. For years he worked for Jean Vilar's theatre. After French films such as Les yeux sans visage (1960), the director David Lean asked him for Lawrence of Arabia (1962). Jarre wrote a grand, broad theme and used unusual colours such as the ondes Martenot, an early electronic instrument. It earned him an Oscar, as did Doctor Zhivago (1965), in which Lara's theme became world famous with balalaikas. In the 1980s he switched to synthesizers, as in Witness (1985). He won three Oscars, all three for films by Lean.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the broad main theme with its great leaps, and hear how percussion and unusual instruments colour the desert or the Russian steppe.
