Maurice Jarre

Maurice Jarre werd in 1924 in Lyon geboren en studeerde aan het conservatorium van Parijs, met slagwerk als hoofdvak. Hij werkte jarenlang voor het theater van Jean Vilar. Na Franse films als Les yeux sans visage (1960) vroeg regisseur David Lean hem voor Lawrence of Arabia (1962). Jarre schreef een groots, breed thema en gebruikte ongewone kleuren zoals de ondes Martenot, een vroeg elektronisch instrument. Het leverde hem een Oscar op, net als Doctor Zhivago (1965), waarin het thema van Lara met balalaika's wereldberoemd werd. In de jaren tachtig stapte hij over op synthesizers, zoals in Witness (1985). Hij won drie Oscars, alle drie voor films van Lean.
