Lawrence of Arabia

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The music for the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia did not come about easily. Director David Lean first thought of Malcolm Arnold, but Arnold did not think much of the film, together with William Walton. Producer Sam Spiegel then brought in Richard Rodgers, but Lean called his work nonsense. The young Frenchman Maurice Jarre had meanwhile written a theme that Lean liked so much that he let him score the whole film. Jarre had six weeks. The London Philharmonic Orchestra played the music at Shepperton Studios, with three ondes Martenot, among other instruments.

As with The Bridge on the River Kwai, Lean wanted to use a march by Kenneth Alford: The Voice of the Guns, which sounds in the overture and in fragments throughout the film. The score won the Oscar for Best Original Score and is regarded as one of the best film scores ever. In 2005 the American Film Institute ranked it third.
