LTJ Bukem
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
LTJ Bukem, real name Daniel Andrew Williamson, is a British jungle producer and DJ, born in 1967. He and his label Good Looking are above all associated with the jazzy, atmospheric side of jungle. He was trained as a classical pianist and discovered jazz fusion as a teenager. At one point he played in a jazz-funk band. In the late 1980s he chose DJing, and he became known in the rave scene of the early 1990s. His stage name comes from his nickname Book 'em, taken from the television series Hawaii Five-O.
Music and breakthrough
With his label Good Looking Records and the club Speed in London, which he ran with DJ Fabio, he carved out a place of his own. The compilation series Logical Progression revealed a side of drum and bass influenced by jazz and ambient. That style became known as intelligent drum and bass. In 1995 he made an Essential Mix together with MC Conrad. In 1997 he remixed the James Bond theme for David Arnold's project. Only in 2000 did his first solo album appear, the double album Journey Inwards, which leaned heavily on his love of jazz fusion.
Influence
Bukem plays all over the world, often under the name Progression Sessions. He shows that a fast breakbeat and soft piano chords can together create a calm, almost meditative atmosphere, and in this way he gave dance music a side that could be listened to.
