Jérôme Kaltenbach

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Jérôme Kaltenbach is a French conductor. From 1979 to 1998 he was music director of the opera company in Nancy, now called the Opéra national de Lorraine. He succeeded Noël Lancien and was himself succeeded by Sebastian Lang-Lessing. In those almost twenty years he headed the orchestra and the opera house on the Place Stanislas.

On record he can be heard in French music of the late nineteenth and the twentieth century. In 1998, for example, he recorded Chausson's Symphony in B-flat, together with the Poème and Viviane, and in 1999 a record of work by Erik Satie, including Parade, Mercure and Relâche and the Trois Gymnopédies. The Satie recordings fit Satie's role in the history of popular music, because his short, bare, repetitive pieces have so often since been heard as a forerunner of minimalist and ambient music.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Satie's Trois Gymnopédies and notice how little happens: a calm accompaniment and a simple melody that keeps returning.
