Noël

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Noël is Joan Baez's sixth studio album and her first Christmas album. It was released in November 1966. Together with the arranger and conductor Peter Schickele, known as PDQ Bach, she recorded, for the first time, a record outside the usual folk format with guitar. She also made her next two albums with him, with classical orchestration.

In contrast to many other Christmas albums, she chose mainly traditional material and a serious, restrained tone, not light-hearted or commercial songs. There are well-known titles on it, such as The Little Drummer Boy, and less familiar ones, such as Down in Yon Forest. Schickele also arranged a few short instrumental pieces. The album is dedicated to Pablo Casals, at least The Carol of the Birds is.
