Itamar Golan

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Itamar Golan is an Israeli pianist. He was born on 3 August 1970 in Vilnius in Lithuania and moved with his parents to Israel at the age of one. He studied piano with Lara Vodovoz and Emmanuel Krazovsky and gave his first recital when he was seven. From 1985 to 1989, thanks to a scholarship from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation, he was able to continue his studies at the New England Conservatory in Boston, with Leonard Shure and Patricia Zander. He later learned chamber music with Chaim Taub.

Music and breakthrough

Golan began as a soloist and chamber musician in the United States and Israel. He played live or on record with many violinists, cellists and singers, among them Kyung Wha Chung, Janine Jansen, Barbara Hendricks, Maxim Vengerov, Shlomo Mintz, Mischa Maisky and María Dueñas. From 1991 to 1994 he taught at the Manhattan School of Music in New York. He is now professor of chamber music at the Paris Conservatoire.

Influence

His discography is broad. It includes violin sonatas, works for clarinet and piano, the album The Rose Album from 2002, the album sax+ in 2011 and Between the Clouds in 2020. Golan thus stands for the type of musician who is rarely in the foreground, but without whom many great soloists would not sound the way they do. In chamber music the pianist makes the other player's sound possible and lets him or her shine.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to one of his recordings of a violin sonata and notice how the piano follows the violinist and sometimes leads: who has the melody, and who gives the rhythm?
