Clouds

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Clouds is Joni Mitchell's second album and was released on 1 May 1969 on Reprise Records. Her debut Song to a Seagull had already made her better known, partly because other singers recorded her songs. For Clouds she went to A&M Studios in Hollywood. She produced almost everything herself and also painted the cover, a self-portrait. Stephen Stills plays guitar on it.

The sound consists mainly of her voice and acoustic accompaniment, with subtle, unusual harmonies, especially in Songs to Aging Children Come. Chelsea Morning and Both Sides, Now had already been recorded by others. She wrote Both Sides, Now after reading a novel by Saul Bellow in which someone looks at clouds from an aeroplane. The record received mostly good reviews and won a Grammy for Best Folk Performance. AllMusic found her voice more confident than on the debut.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Both Sides, Now and notice how voice and acoustic accompaniment together carry the image of the clouds, seen from two sides.
